Incredible video on importance of stacking your bones instead of focusing on muscle.

So wish we would have thought of this video as it is what Bones for Life is all about. Well, well done.

Finally!!! Bipolar Disorder and Postural Control: Mind-Body Connection Suggests New Directions for Treatment, #Research

27 May

What somatic pioneers like Moshe Feldenkrais and Ida Rolf thought more than a little likely when developing their works 50-70 years ago, that quality of movement and posture are directly related to emotional development, research is now investigating.  This study looks at how postural control might impact emotional development and control.

Many of us in the field of somatic education has been curious and perhaps even had the opportunity to work with a person here or there with some significant mental illness labels.  However, to my knowledge no one has had the opportunity to work with a significant number of people in this population and document the results.

Put this emerging research together with Steven Porges' new work "The Poly Vagel Theory: The Neurophysiological Founds of Emotions, Attachment, Communication and Self-Regulation"  and the field of possibilities for these folks could break wide open in the next 20-50 years.  I'd like to say 5 but I think 20 is optimistic given the postural rigidity of the medical system and our culture around the importance of quality movement for the infant and child.

Bang a drum...while you carry it on your head--while you walk. #physical therapy #bonesforlife #feldenkrais #gait

16 May

Bones for Life exercises are inspired in large part by the African water carrier's gait.  Rhythm is not only a key aspect of gait, but also pleasure in life. Rhythm is often overlooked in settings such physical therapy, rehab or even learning in the elementary classroom.  Yet active engaging rhythm in voice, hands, or feet (better yet all at once) is very powerful in creating the space for new or improved function and engagement in the world.

Here we see and hear, load bearing through the head, walking, and incredible music.  Enjoy.
